For the TOTAL Beginner! - how to make a Flash Website

I've finally made a thorough Step by Step tutorial on how to make a Flash Website.

Here's the link:
http://www.dieselshack.com/dieselshack_tutorial-01.htm

I know its near impossible to find this type of tutorial.
This is great for total beginners in Flash - straight forward steps with screenshots and no crazy action script knowledge required.

It took me about 3 hours to put together, so let me know how it works out for you.

But why make it out of flash in the first place? Animation and actionscripting is what flash is all about. It would be much better practise to makea site like this out of css and only use flash for the elements where its functionality is needed.

Who would want to make that? I'd make your demo site more interesting - it's proper dull.

This is to show BASIC fundamentals for making a website in flash.

This is for people who still dont have the skills to even make buttons in flash.

OF COURSE it would make more sense to make a site like this using CSS -
This tutorial is to show the whole concept behind making a flash website. In later tutorials i will cover more about animations and actionscripting.

When analyzing the effectivness of this tutorial, THINK about it from the perspective of a beginner - someone who has barely used flash and never made a website.

Its not about showing off - its about learning.

While I can't disagree that learning is a good thing, I can say that I don't think teaching people the wrong way to do things is going to help anything.

99% of websites should not be built with Flash. Teaching people how to make a simple Flash brochure site teaches them not only the fundamentals of Flash-website building, but instills in them the notion that it's the proper way to make a website.

Education is good so long as it's not misguiding people.

pgo, I respect your opinion, and I agree with you that a lot of websites out there are misusing Flash in their websites.

I would also like to hear more about how you define a 'wrong' way of making a website....

Don't take it the wrong way, I know its easy to be misunderstood in forums; I'm just interested in hearing other takes on what defines a right or wrong way of a site being designed.

I myself think if the website works, doesnt crash, looks good, makes the client happy and brings him more revenue, than it shouldnt matter if the site is made with FLash, Dreamweaver, or a jar of pickles.

The right tool for the right job. Sometimes Flash is the right tool, but usually it isn't.

I noticed you didn't mention the word "users" even once. I happen to think that the "users" matter more than anything.

The designer's job is to facilitate communication - to get the client's message across effectively and efficiently. That means making a design that's usable and accessible to a broad range of people and devices - not just people with 20/20 vision and Flash 8 installed in their browser of choice. Along with that comes the issue of search engines, which don't look favorably on Flash sites, of course.

Then comes the issue of making the client happy. Part of the designer's job - as a professional hired by someone to help them communicate effectively with their audience - is to educate the client (as well as themselves) about what is and is not good practice. If the client wants a gaudy Flash intro, the designer should have the stones (and the knowledge) to explain why that's not a good idea.

Have a look at cam's site - www.teetonic.com - or NYTimes.com and see a good use of Flash (slideshows, interactive visual elements, etc). It's only used when it's needed - when it's the right tool for the right job.

And don't get me wrong, some HTML sites can be just as bad as Flash sites.
