I am making a puzzle in flash and every piece will have the same function(s) attached to them, I am wondering if there is a "catch all" identifier that I can use to assign the function(s) to all the pieces on frame 1 of the _root timeline.

Look into the Delegation Event Model. It's all about like listener classes and stuff like that.
