image swap transitions

been a while since Ive done this type of thing... My client wants a gallery of images in his page banner swapping on a loop. I wanted to make the transitions more interesting than just a fade-out/fade-in but am having trouble finding a decent tutorial/effect.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance
