I don't beleive you would get any more from a distance learning course than from going to the library and getting Teach Yourself Flash or similar text book. Flash the software comes with tutorials which you can walk through. Once you have the basics you can learn more by experimenting with projects. Is flash an essential tool? It can certainly add value to a design by adding movement, banners, image transitions. I would never build a whole site in Flash. The more you know the more you are worth I reckon. |

First off, on-topic: Don't bother paying someone to teach you Flash. Just look at tutorials (the ones that come with Flash, others around the web) or books. Quote:
No one should be doing sites professionally (a.k.a "for money") unless they produce professional-level sites. Simple as that. The problem is that there are plenty of kids who make sites like slmacombee.com and get paid to do it. They take work away from people who could create a professional website just because many people say "Why pay a professional $1000 when I could pay my 14 year old nephew $50 to do it for me!?" But at the same time, these are also the sorts of clients who don't care or know what good design is, so they don't see a difference between hiring a kid and hiring a professional. However, I have no hard feelings against madnick because he seems honestly interested in learning the right way to do things. |

Everyone has got to start somewhere, and we'll always have more to learn ... I know I do. I started training as a graphic designer (for print) over 10 years ago and things have changed a lot since then. My advice would be to learn as much Flash/XHTML/CSS whatever as you can; You'll probably find it will be your main source of income as clients who place their branding with a someone usually want their site created by the same designer. |

Yes and no. No, because XHTML is a reformulation of HTML as an application of XML. Yes, because XML is more flexible (hence the "extensible" part of the name). With XML, you can define your own tags and create your own markup language. So, a valid XHTML document is (usually) XML. An XML document is usually not an XHTML document. XML looks like... Code:
