is this a joke?? i am so glad i have already got a job in design.... £25 per week wouldn't even cover the basics, let alone rent. if you guys want the skills of talented new designers i suggest you make their time worthwhile - you'd get more than a fiver a day begging on the streets!

Your not supposed to live on it, thats what parents are for. When I did work experience I got paid nothing and had to buy my own food and travel.

lucky you then who had parents in a position to do that for you.. i still disagree with the practice of unpaid/poorly paid work experience, but maybe that's just me. nuff said.

Internships are one of the best ways to get your foot in the door without work experience.

Most recent grads don't have work experience (I graduated May '04 and I still have no real work experience) and working for free can give you that experience without requiring that experience. That is, companies don't like to hire people with no experience, so getting an unpaid internship gets you that experience. In fact, many companies who hire a student/recent grad will keep them on if they are impressed - and pay them a full wage.

At least it's that way in the states...and, yes, I mean there are no jobs to be found. Especially way out in fly-over country where I am temporarily residing.
