Post holiday blues or need a career change?

I've worked as a creative artworker for Elmwood for about 6 months now and I thought it was a dream come true when I got the job, but now i'm not so sure, I just cant imagine myself enjoying being sat in front of a Mac for 7 hours a day for the rest of my working life being like a battery hen pumping out work as fast as I can.

Saying that - i've just returned from a 5 week holiday in Australia so appreciate I have post holiday blues of an extreme kind, but I just feel so unmotivated and am doubting my career altogether, its not good.

Think seriously about what you'd like to do instead... what's your new dream job/agency to work for?

Try to turn the blues into motivation, if you act on the motivation the blues don't seem so bad.

Well I thought Elmwood would be a dream but its not so really, not half as friendly as the smaller agency I used to work for, guess thats the trouble with working for a bigger company, its not as personal.

Difficult to turn blues into motivation when I hate coming into work every morning.

Change you're description to 'muff diver' and go freelance.
Probably poor advice for you but nothing motivates more than grafting for yourself.

Yes i'd thought about going freelance, or getting together with a few designer/web friends and starting a business, but not sure if I have the guts to risk it. I like the security of working for a company, but I do like it when I do freelance work.

As "Go It Alone" by Geoff Burch says... what gives more job security than working for yourself? You can't get fired, and you HAVE to work or you don't eat.

Yes that's very true. I like working with a small group of people though, id feel isolated working alone, plus I couldn't take a pay cut at the moment. Argh its a pickle.

Well you have no choice but to suck it up and make the best of of things

If you sit and think your job is shit, you'll get depressed and make it even worse lol

having worked in a big place i know how it feels.

perhaps take some solice in the thought that a lot of folks would give their right gonad for a chance at a job like yours.

Edit: Mmm girls would probably have to give something else.

I work in a TV studio so most of the time I'm doing my own thing. It helps my mind and then since I'm working on freelance (and it's not a conflict of interest) I am also keeping my design sharp and learning new things which I have applied to the job.

Do some freelance or other creative outlets to ease up monotony. I do voice acting and jewelry making too

Go freelance go freelance go freelance go freelance go freelance - If it does not work out get another job. Life is too short especially if you hate going into work everyday.

Agreed. Tough it out a little longer and really try to get to the bottom of what you don't like about your current job. If you can't change yourself or your situation (ie. you're still miserable), get the f*ck out. Life's too short.

going freelance is not going to change the fact that he will be stuck in front of a Mac 7 hours a day for the rest of his working life, in fact it will probably increase the time stuck in front of a mac

Yes but he'll feel more like he's in control of himself and working for yourself is infinitely more rewarding than working for someone else.

Also - it gives you the freedom to work your own hours usually; I find the hardest part of working for a company sometimes is getting in for 9am and expecting to sit and work, when my in-built timer says "nope, no work for you until 2pm" - that sucks and fills you with self-doubt etc.
