I see where you're coming from with the freelance thing, but I know people that work for themselves and they just never stop working.

Sometimes. But I think I speak for many of the self-employed when I say it is very rewarding hard work.

Financially rewarding or job satisfaction wise?

First year or so was job satisfaction.
Both ever since.

I just don't feel I have that sort of know how, like actually getting clients to start with, I guess you have to do a lot of work outside of a full time job to get a decent client base before you can give up the employment and go 100% freelance?

It will vary from person to person. Although it doesn't hurt to have a client base of sorts before you go freelance full time the best way to find new work is local business networking.
