crap jobs

just looking at the "what courses have you done" thread and it reminded me of the crap jobs I had to do after finishing uni to pay off student debts.

what is the worst job you've had?

Hmmmm, there's a few contenders

Working in a herb farm for £2.20/hour for a bitch-dragon-from-hell (we didn't really get on)
Serving fried breakfasts at Littlewoods restaurant for £2.73/hour
Or maybe the mundane office scenario of being a Norwich Union temp in the thrilling "Pensions and Assurance" section, chilled out entertainment all round.

the one I'm meant to be doing right no is up there with them - pushing paper around Abbey.

worst was probably putting lids on tins in a paint factory when I was 16. I had long hair back then and everytime I went in the warehouse, they'd shout "It just so happens you could save my life!" (yellow pages french polishers ad for those that remember).

They never tired of it.

Nice, I forgot to mention various warehouse jobs. Huge generalisation I know, but there's something unique about warehouse employees...

man, temping is the worst..
Tracey from the agency wakes you up at 7 am with a cheery phone call giving you the good news that they've got some work for you. It's in a Yorkshire pudding factory and will take 2 hours on the bus to get there. It pays 3 pounds an hour.
Great.
no thanks...(I had the good sense to turn that one down)
back to bed.

probably my worst job was in a warehouse unpacking stuff and putting it on shelves. minumum wage. got sacked after 1 week for sleeping in and turning up late one day and general laziness.

met an old bloke there who had been doing that job for 60 years.(he was 14 when he started, been there all his life)
jesus, the mind boggles.

Summers in Tandy's selling a million differnt and un-indexed transistors and fiddly bits to geeky 50 year olds - and three flights of stairs to go up and down whenever someone wanted to look at a TV or stereo.

Oh and we had quite a lot of transvestites in there for some reason - a bloke with a beard and pat butcher makeup - floral type dress, used to come in and buy a big bunch of batteries once a week I have no idea why couldn't have just got them from tesco's or something like everyone else....

It wasn't too bad though, as we used to use the scanners to listen to peoples mobile conversations in our breaks (back in the days of analog...)

Multimedia section of Toys R Us. Had to wear the blue/yellow get up and parade around with a giraffe badge on.

Boss was a twat - used to be in the army (similar group to warehouse employees I think).
I was the only person on a temporary contract who'd ever got a warning he said. I was proud.

I once worked for Apple demonstrating iMacs in a PC World store near Newcastle. Was full of geeks, snotting kids conning their grannies into buying them £2grand PCs to do their homework on and people asking "will it run windows?"

PC World staff are all crooks btw.

Apparently, of course

I'm cleaning up warts, bulges, acne, and the what not in a photography studio, for ugly fat bastards wanting a 'pretty portrait' over their fire places,
doesn't sound so bad, but 9 hours a day - couple of days a week, of staring at massivly ugly (sometimes deformed - yes I've 'adjusted' a malformed child before) people really isn't healthy - minimum wage too.

But shan't moan, working in a slaughter house sounds worse! - butcherering

to name a few.....

landscape gardening - sounded great. I imagined myself whistling and strolling around with a lawnmower with a butterfly on my shoulder.(?)
In reality it was back-breaking nightmare working alongside morons with communiction probs. lasted 1 week (again)
It nearly killed me.

nightshift at a postoffice depot sorting out postman's sacks into different cages. Fucking hell. lasted 1 shift.

warehouse putting price tags on cheap clothes. 100% Moron workforce.

<edit> I agree with Alice though - the slaughterhouse wins as the worst so far I think

what is the worst job you've had?

i'm currently in uni and my current crap job consists of beeing a senior (ha!) customer service rep where i basicly tell idiot customers why their cell phone bill in 600$ (or 250pounds for you english folks). i basicly get screamed at all day by people who obviously have issues understanding the concept of dialing.

my favorite was when a lady called me to ask me if the time on her phone was the time we used to determine if she was under the ulimited eve portion of her cell phone plan or if it was the actuall time on our (as she called it) computerized thing.

the pay is good though and i'm much better of then most canadian students.

i've only had 1 job in the uk and it was a live-in position as a waiter in charing (about 2miles south of ashford) and it paid 300 pounds a week. it was ok but boring as hell as the only customers we would get would be the construction workers making the reserved train line for the london/paris eurostar. classy.

haha (at the sack comments)

that reminds me - I saw this stupid TV program over here called "the man show", which showed people who had really awful jobs. One poor bastard worked as a turkey masterbator. It showed him doing it as well. he said he gets through about 150 a day.
unfortunately, that image will stay with me,
another bloke worked as a sewage scuba diver..he swims about in actual shit everyday.
