okay, so I already have a BA, but it is in Liberal Studies. Do I need to get an AA or a BA in order to get started? What is the difference between graphic design and web design?

I really appreciate your comments and helpful links. So, if I want to design web sites for a living, what type of degree do I need? Is an AA in graphic design/web design sufficient?

What do you guys do for a living? Is it hard to find work?

Thanks again!

i can only speak for graphic design.

you don't require a qualification but it helps.

what really works is:
1 a good quality portfolio of work
2 technical knowledge
3 a professional attitude.

the portfolio is the most important element but I'd say it is hard to get anywhere without all three.

you don't *need* any type of degree. some places for whatever reason demand a BA in the field though. you need skill and a competent portfolio. and there is no such thing as 'sufficient' in web design. you will always be trying to keep your skill set current.

you REALLY *need* to be comfortable with using google/the internet as a resource. some of the links provided here (especially the wikipedia articles) should have ALREADY been found by you. it doesn't seem like you've done any actual searching/reading on your own at all.

I'm currently trying to build my own portfolio, as I will be making the career switch in about five years when I head back to my home country. As to how I am doing this:

First, I studied up on a bunch of different technologies and decided which ones I need to know first. I started with flash (which was actually probably not the easiest place to start, but I was just curious about it), then I went on to XHTML, then CSS, then javascript, and now PHP. Thats where I'm at as of now, and after I feel quite comfortable with it (actually, after I finish my current projects and have more time) I am planning on learning how AJAX works.

Next, I used my influence and skills of persuasion at work to convince those that I work with that its a better idea to have me do our homepages as it's cheaper than outsourcing. Actually, after my wages are factored in, since I'm still learning, its probably not that much cheaper at all. Fortunately I'm the only one who has put that together so far

Lastly, I just started bringing it into my daily conversations with people I know. It comes up that I have been studying pretty hard and learning a bunch of programming, and I work it towards seeing if they want a site made.

As of yet, I'm not taking money for them, as I am using the sites I am designing as a learning tool for myself as much as anything. If I were to go to school, I would have to pay cash, so I don't feel bad about this as at least Im not spending cash.

I also read a lot of different articles on the net, and I read this site everyday to see what kinds of things people come up with. I try to read as many articles as I can, and slowly but surely Im getting a good feel for everything!
