At our Christmas party this year, a friend at work (artworker) and myself (graphic designer) got talking about the company and salaries etc, and I learned that he was on 6k p/h more than me and i've no idea why. He's worked there 6months longer, is 3 years older and we have very similar qualifications, but I just cant understand why he's on a higher salary. If anyone can put my mind at rest that would be great, as its bugging me big time.

He's probably either very good at his job or chummy with the boss.
Within small agencies, if you really get on well with the people you work for, you could be valued more as an employee.

Sorry I meant per year. He is good at his job, but without sounding too modest, so am I, only the other day one of our biggest clients commented to the gaffer about the quality of my work and service.

I dunno if I could ask my boss about it, i'd feel a bit daft.

Not sure about the bigger cock thing, I dont tend to ask my mates questions like that.

I've got just over 2 years studio experience, he has 6 months more than me.

isn't that how it normally works... at the start you would come in at a lower level because your job is more sort after for a young designer!!!... and your income jumps more when you are promoted and more experienced.

salaries are all a pile of pish unless your company has a really good grading system in where if you fall into a certain criteria and its all contracted up etc so if they dick you around you can sue their asses.
Ive been places where a bloke doing the same thing as me with less experience got paid more. Flaps. So I left.
As said ^ it's all about who knows who/buddies with boss etc in smaller companies.
If it's getting on your tits then I would make a brave effort to speak to the boss, otherwise you will just sit there fizzling.

I had a raise a couple of weeks before the xmas do, thats how we got onto salaries, so i cant ask for another now.

He doesn't have a house, children etc, he's in exactly the same position as me.

Yes he is just an artworker, and is no more friendly with the gaffers than i am.

He probably just asked for more money or interviewed better. i've had quite a few contracts which prohibit me from discussing salary with other employees. I'd check that before going to your boss for a chat.

Jeez some of you guys are offensive and presumptiuous. I signed up again because it wouldn't let me login at all (no matter what I did), I cant forget my password as Firefox remembers them all for me!

Anyway, back onto subject - I will check my contract for the salary discussion thing but I doubt they'll mind. I might mention something to the gaffer in the new year when i've decided what ill say.

Its not that i'm willing to settle for less, I think my salary is on average for my job, its just his seems strangely high.
