hosting a few small sites

Hey,

I'm quite new here but wondered if you might have any tips. Im working on a few projects at the mo and need a new host as im currently using web mania and its pretty shit. Ive seen www.asmallorange.com which has pretty much everything im after and looks great but is based in the US. Im in the UK. Any suggestions of hosting companies in the UK that are offer vaguely similar services to a small orange? The main thing i need is the ability to park further domains on my primary domain, or addon domains. i don't want to be able to resell though! If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Why don't you want to use a US-based host? If the package and price is right, go with them.

surely that isn't good for speed if all your traffic is coming from the UK?! Or is this a complete lie i conjured up in my head?!

for serving up some images and what the not you'll be fine. if you were delivering large software files or mp3's then it might make a difference.

i've just had a hosting charge tripple b'cos i needed physical access to the server so moved it from the usa to the uk.

go host in the usa.

I beleive tangerines offer similar services.

Seriously though, host in the US - it's way cheaper. All my hosting is done in Texas, (not the DIY store), and I've noticed no speed problems for sites with a primarily UK audience.

I use A Small Orange for one of my sites.

They are great. I can't say it enough. Support is on the ball - forums, help tickets, knowledge base, no phone, but they're always there and if you have a problem, they'll often help you through instant messaging. And their staff is highly knowledgable.

Their servers are fast, virtually no downtime (maybe a few minutes/month if any).

For the price, you can't beat them. I recommend them to everyone.

Connections across the water are excellent these days, so for the majority of websites you won't notice any difference hosting in the US rather than the UK. You might be talking about a 1-3 second difference (if even) in loading times.

It may be worth checking with the hosting provider to see if their data centre has good connections with either Europe or the UK.

Some people believe that the location of an IP address, be it UK or otherwise, affects how Google lists your website, i.e. if your website is hosted in the UK you will be listed in Google UK etc. As far as I know, Google doesn't release much information on how they work, so this could be speculation but something worth considering.

Another thing to consider are any Data Protection Act implications, if it affects you.

Again, most of this is probably overkill for you but it's worth knowing.

We have all of our servers in Texas and we have clients located in the UK. The big lake isn't too bad these days on transfer rates and I doubt you will even notice speed differences. I agree with Brown though; if you are serving large files you may notice a little speed decrease. However, it would still be minimal. Also, as far as pricing is concerned, you will be better off hosting from the US.
