Web Hosting/Domain Name

i'm just about to have my first stab at creating a website - a self-promotion/portfolio site for my freelance graphic design & illustration business - can anyone recommend a good webhosting and domain registration package with a decent amout of webspace at a reasonable price?

(shit, what am i letting myself in for, i know nothing about this kind of thing..... i'm just stubborn and refusing to give up before i have had a go at doing it myself! )

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Register domains at GoDaddy. Then find a host. When you sign up with a host, tell them you have your domain already and they'll give you nameservers to which you'll set at GoDaddy. It's a good idea to keep your registrar separate from your host - this allows for much easier hosting transfers if you run into hosting trouble.

I'm currently using 1&1 for my site, but they're shit. The only reason I'm using them is that my friend gave me his free 3 year account. Just launched a site for a political group the other day at A Small Orange - they seem quite good so far.

I believe this board is hosted at LunarPages - there's a link at the footer. I've read some complaints about them (mostly email and database related) over at webhostingtalk.com, but their packages are huge.

Pun intended.

dt is hosted on its own shiney new dual opteron server over at liquidweb.

do a bit more background on 1&1 before placing ANY domains in their care. specifically check out webhostingtalk.com

My mistake on the hosting. Did it used to be hosted there? Or is the link purely advertisement? (If so, I'll be sure to click. )

Yes, stay away from 1&1, they blow. And, definitely peruse webhostingtalk.com.

I recently signed up for some cheap as chips hosting here:
http://www.34sp.com/hostingfeatures.php

Haven't had any troubles yet (£15 package) - it depends what you need from your hosting really.
