Free or Paid Hosting?

There have been many posts on this form around the topic of free hosting; this is my attempt of briefly explaining it. At first you may think, “Well if it’s free, it’s surely worth it?” If only it was that simple, there are a few problems which you can quickly run in to.

Generally speed on free hosting sites greatly suffers; this could be due to limiters which are set. These services are usually very popular; having many users all running on the same server quickly slows down server response time.

Most of the free internet hosting companies have lucrative terms and conditions. Commonly they contain terms such as: “Your account can be terminated at any time, without reason and any data uploaded to the server will be permanently lost.” If you were working on an important project, and you had some important data on the server, that would be lost for good.

There are very few free hosting services, most lasting for less than a year. It is very hard to find a decent service, where you can securely hold an account with them. Free web hosts are usually a company which has an unlimited server package themselves.

In terms of databases you are usually limited to fewer than 3 databases; this can be annoying if your website, or blog, needs several databases to run. PHP functions such as “mail()” are often restricted on free hosting sites to limit the amount of spam which is sent out by the server. The terms normally state that the server can only be used in conjunction with a webpage on the same server and cannot be used purely as a file hosting site.

If the website is only a testing tool, then free hosting is your best bet. If you are working on something, even if it’s only slightly important, it is not worth the risk.

I think your conclusion be re-stated to this thesis:

You get what you pay for.

Paid hosting is way better then free hosting, if you are planning to host an important website go for the PAID hosting.

Free hosting doesn't worth the risk. Saving 5 pounds, euros or dollars is not a big deal. Loosing data would be a pain however!

Free web hsots has so many disadvantages, The biggest disadvantage of free web hosting is that you never know when their business gets shutdown and you might have to lose your sensitive data. one should always go for paid hosting as it is the best choice . I got my vps hosting from vpswebserver.com and i am very satisfied with their service and support.

webxtech, which part did you find most useful?
Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian

it's better to talk about cheap and expensive rather than free or paid infarct since hosting services are more and more cheap i do not need any longer to run the risk to choose free services which do not offer any warranty of their products.facilities bring difficulties most of the time

Paid hosting over free hosting any day. If something goes wrong and you're on a free host you don't really have any standing ground since you're not paying for the service. In the end you get what you pay for.

Paid all the way! I use Tsohost in the UK, they offer a great price and support is always answered within about 20 mins regardless of time or day. They have a light package, which has all the usual stuff and is £15 a year! Just over a pound a month - if you cant afford that you are in the wrong job/hobby!

If you like them and need a discount code I have one listed on my site

Free hosting is ok if you are doing development, but as others have pointed out free hosting providers have no accountability...if things go wrong they have no burden to "make it right" for you. If your website is important it is much better to go with a paid hosting service that has a service level agreement.
