Hosting

I'd like a new web host, but they've got to have those really snazzy looking servers, you know the ones.

Can anyone help?

well i had bad times with both ukfast.net and clickhosting.co.uk so i can say i'd never go with either again

theplanet.com have been Fantastic to us with our servers, try to avoid naff resellers and overpriced sharks.

as for domains, we deal direct with nominet for our .co.uk domains and get .coms from godaddy.com as they kinda rock albeit a bit of a payne to go through the order process, they give total control, a great price, 24/7 support and the dogs.

I found the best deal with sensical (www.sensical.net) - I did use webmania before and they where ok, although you got what you paid for I guess. I know some others have had moans about then. If you just want to register a site, 123-reg seems the cheapest I have seen..

Something tells me they'd renaig on the deal if I moved 30gb of our site there andd started pulling 8.8gb of data a day........

You get what you pay for in this game. £5 a month is enough to get a couple of boxes of Anadin, something you'd possibly need to help with the headaches of cheap n nasty hosting.

Well it does say within reason, I have 1Gb up there now thou, and not a word... I know what you are saying, you get what you pay for, but then if you think about how much it costs to runing a hosting company, I think you pay for a lot more than you get with some!

Just found this at the bottom of the page:
* There is no limit on bandwidth or disk space. Sensical.net reserves the right to restrict unreasonable behaviour.

Hmm, well if 1Gb isn't unreasonable for a 'personal' account, I ain't complaining

it doesn't cost that much to run a hosting company, yes it does if you build and maintain a datacenter but just getting a server from somewhere and an emon account isn't rocket science or that costly, you can get a dual xeon 2.8 machine with 1gb ram and 2 x 73gb drives plus 100mbps pipe and 2000gb data a month with offsite nas backup and 100% uptime for <£200 a month.......

That's why there are so many nasty bedroom hosting companies out there.

Hey, if you aint complaining though you can't knock it, just make sure your data is backed up offsite. I just don't trust this hosting industry, there are too many skankers out there.
