easyspace, dedicated hosting and domains

Hey chaps,

This is a question for you all because I find myself in a scenario I've not come across in regards to easyspace.com.

I have a dedicated server with easyspace, which I've had for a couple of months. Initially, things have been good, no down time whatsoever, and everything has been spick and span.

I provide hosting to a select few clients that I create websites for so as a result they need to point their domains to my server. Now, here Easyspace are saying that they need to change the registrar of the domain to easyspace for them to point it to my dedicated server.

What I'm used to though, with all the hosts that I have had previously, was to raise a ticket to say add x, y, z.com to their DNS, and point it to a set nameserver.

Is it wrong for them to say the domains have to be registered with them? I've never come across this situation, so I just don't get this...

Right now I'm thinking of going to another host. Are they right? I'm thinking they can't be if they're tying the domains to the hosting?

Can't comment specifically on easyhost but it is indeed bollocks.

Is Using DNS Manager applicable to your box?

Well they've just responded, and say that they'd charge £5 + VAT (17.5%) per domain name that is added onto their own nameservers.

Unfortunately, on that alone, I need to switch hosts by the looks of it.

Hey,

I'm with Domain names, web hosting, virtual servers and dedicated servers from Easyspace, not easyhost.

That said, are you sure you don't already have a dns server installed (it looks like it in their package descriptions) or that you can't do it with your existing registrar (or clients)? Bottom line is it's just a record pointing to an IP.

I can't do it with easyspace at all - they don't have that facility apparently, not when your domain is not registered with them.

They've said they'd add two domains I needed for them to add as a gesture of good will, which is fair enough.

I'm looking for another host now though, I can't be adding more charges to my clientelle or telling them they need to pay to transfer the domain to easyspace. Tad annoying.

In talks with 1and1.co.uk now. I know their support isn't meant to be the best of support, but it's something I rarely need to contact.

Found an interesting article online which lets you create custom nameservers via plesk so reading up.

If the nameserver tutorial doesn't work for whatever reason, I'd have to relocate. Shifting the current clients alone would cost a almost a £200, more if they switch their registrar.

Annoyance x2.

Hello!

We noticed this thread earlier today and thought it merited some input from us - as there seems to be a degree of confusion about the whole matter.

Presumably, each of the domain names you want to use is already with another registrar (probably lots of registrars!). That being the case, you most likely already have DNS Management with each one of them. Therefore there is no reason for you to transfer to Easyspace, just login to the relevant control panel and modify the 'www' A record to point towards your Easyspace Dedicated Server IP address. Wait for DNS propagation to kick in and you're all done. No mess, no fuss, no extra cost.

The second option, if for whatever reason you don't want to take the easy route is that you manage the DNS on your dedicated server. This isn't really recommended primarily because you have no redundancy. You're relying on a single machine which has no failover to control the DNS for your domain name(s). Not the best idea.

The last option is the one which incurs a fee of £5 per annum, per domain. That's our DNS Management plan. Where you want to keep your domain registrations elsewhere but we're providing you with a reliable, proven and rock solid DNS Management solution. With that, you'll be able to manage the DNS for each of the domain names within your main Easyspace Control Panel. Bearing in mind this is not one of our main services, we don't advertise it on our website. This is a service offered purely for folk like yourself who want to use our DNS services without the hassle of transferring domains and mucking around with domain ownership.

Personally, if it were me, I would most likely be going with option number 1. It's the simplest and most straightforward solution you're going to find - and you don't run the risk of messing up your customers DNS as you're only changing a single A record.

I am quite keen to take a look at your support tickets just to check if our responses were in line with our usual standards. I'm not able to find your account based on your username so if you want to PM me your account number or email address it would be appreciated.

As always, we'll be happy to help where we can so if you're having problems - get in touch and let us know.

Kind Regards,
Johnathan Williamson

For those out the loop, easyspace have clarified a load via pm, so it's pretty much all good now.

Server has just gone caputted for the first time since August... 32 mins in, 24 hours after this whole situ, still pending response.

Submitted the ticket at 18:39 GMT, server is still down. No response.

19:45, still now't. Still now't. It's been labeled as critical/disruptive too... 72 mins. Still now't. Gonna stop counting the minutes now. Should be a simple reboot unless something has died in it...

Still now't... and now't.

Hit the three hour mark.

Edit: was loading from cache, I guess. It's well and truly dead still. No tech responses. 13 hours 20 mins.

Verified downtime by trying to validate it by w3, which knocked out a 500 error. Justping and watchmouse say no no to domain and IP.

Fixed at 09:24am.

I remember my nephew had a bad experience trying to contact anyone human at Easyspace a few years ago, when THEY messed up his company domain registrations/host, which set him back weeks, however they are much easier to contact now, specially when they want money from you.

He has since moved on to another hosting company and swore never to deal with them again.

I wonder why communication companies are so incompetent at communicating.

However, I hear Easyspace have got better since and now have phone lines - lol

Not my words Mr Easyspace, but shit sticks!!!

I've been quite fortunate with it going down around business hours. If I had moved a client over as I planned, I'd have been sued well and truly for loss of earnings. 14 hours down, and it required a reboot only.

Yup, all they had to do was reboot it, it's working absolutely fine now.

But I can't be dealing with 9-5 support.
