buying an existing domain name safely? escrow services?

I am after a domain name that isn't being used and have the contact details for the owner, but I don't want to offer to buy it and be ripped off by some comedian who will literally take the money and run!

If they agree to the sale, what is the safest way of ensuring they don't get the money until I am the new registered owner? Are there specific domain name trading websites we could use which feature some sort of escrow service?

If you're buying from a company a simple letter covering the transaction for both parties to sign should suffice.

It looks like it is an individual, living in the US. Looked up escrow.com who deal with things like this and they want a minimum of $25, just wondering if anyone could recommend anything they had used in the past.

I fucking hate domain name squatters, ive tried contacting the owners of another domain name I was after awhile ago, and the cunts never got back to me. What the hell is the point squatting a domain if theres no site on it, and they aren't willing to sell it.

how much are you thinking of paying? if you're moaning about £12 i'm guessing not a lot; if it's only a few quid why the worry?

I wasn't moaning about $25, as the domain owner will obviously want a lot more than that for the domain, I was just wondering if there are better alternatives that come from a personal recommendation.

was just the way you phrased 'they want a minimum of $25'; wasn't really 'avin a go. :P

have you looked @ their registrar? chances are that if they do provide an escrow service 1) you may be able just to approach them, 2) they won't deal with anyone else

Take a look at sedo.com - used them to buy an existing domain in the past without problem.

You can use Escrow.com for the fine escrow service or SEDO.com same.
