Taking over a site from someone else
I suspect this must be a common problem but are there any simple ways around this? Example: A company asks me to update their website. Their hosts/designer, etc. refuse to pass over the FTP details so I cannot take on the work until the login details are released or the company changes their hosting company and buy a new domain. Often, the customer say they don't know who the hosts are so I do a little bit of 'whois', etc. and this usually reveals the hosts - but not always of course if everything has been hidden. I always end up stuck and unable to take on the job. This has been very annoying because the customer has failed to get the inormation. What are the best ways around the problem? I would be interested to hear your experiences with this. |

temporarily host it yourself on a staging server and get the client to deal with it if you have to deal with the host/former devloper/designer... ask them nicely threaten legal action send the boys 'round pray ... take your pick meh.

Glad you like it. It's a wicked effect. Drives me wild too! Back to the problem - I guess this is a pain in the rear for many of us but it appears to be very common and has prevented me getting several jobs this year. The level of control some companies inflict on their customers is ridiculous. I had problems with one of my own sites last year and had to fight for nearly two months to escape a problem hosting company as they refused to unlock my domain because they could sell it on for a tidy profit. Some people eh. Anyway, time for a bit of this. |
