Hosting and domain names

Why is it that some web design and hosting companies will not let their customers use a domain name they purchased from another company - even though the customer hasn't built a site yet?

Should that cause any red flags for customers in such a situation?

Thanks!

Yes. If a hosting company won't let you use a domain you purchased elsewhere, I'd stay far, far away.

In fact, it's advisable to keep your domain registration and your web hosting separate.

It makes it easier to move your hosting if you need to.

If you buy a domain and hosting from 1&1, for instance, and you want to move to another host you'll have to get your domain registration transferred off of their servers first, which takes a written form, signed and faxed, etc. This happened to me when I was young and naive. 1&1 sucks.

Easier to just log in to your registrar and change your nameservers.

Stick with someone like 123-reg or godaddy or similar for registering your domains. There's going to be at the most a quid or a buck in the price difference and you have complete control of the domain and don't have to deal with silly hidden "transfer-out fees" that some hosts slip in there.

Thanks again for all the responses! What does it mean to log into your registrar and change nameservers?

Even we provide you domain registration service but we don't force our clients to register a domain with us. Host who don't allow domains registered elsewhere are not trustworthy and one should not go with them.
