Why is it that some web design and hosting companies will not let their customers use a domain name they purchased from another company - even though the customer hasn't built a site yet? Should that cause any red flags for customers in such a situation? Thanks! |

It makes it easier to move your hosting if you need to. If you buy a domain and hosting from 1&1, for instance, and you want to move to another host you'll have to get your domain registration transferred off of their servers first, which takes a written form, signed and faxed, etc. This happened to me when I was young and naive. 1&1 sucks. Easier to just log in to your registrar and change your nameservers. |

Stick with someone like 123-reg or godaddy or similar for registering your domains. There's going to be at the most a quid or a buck in the price difference and you have complete control of the domain and don't have to deal with silly hidden "transfer-out fees" that some hosts slip in there. |
