Be sure to look for 'the catch'.

There often is one with free hosting
(what with there being 'no such thing as a free meal' and all that malarky)

They're sure to be VERY minimally specified and may even be too lowly specced for a portfolio site.

A quick glance at the 50Megs site shows that the free hosting has very limited email facilities, no ftp access, some potentially limiting filesize capping and the perennial popups and banners.
There's the catch, or at least, some of them.

If this is a 'just for the fun of it' site then you might not mind the popups and banners, the email limitations and the other drawbacks. However, if this is going to be a site where you show your work to others who might then want to employ your services, then I'd strongly advise against going with any plan that uses popups and banner ads.
You're also soon likely to find that you need ftp and greater email facilities than those offered by the 50Meg free hosting plan.

As is said many times on web-design forums - few things undermine the credibility and professionalism of a site/author than popup adverts and banner ads.

Hosting is pretty darn cheap nowadays and you can get a brilliantly specced hosting deal for less than £2 p/month.

I'll have a think about what to recommend and post again later.

In the meantime, knowing now that you're planning a Flash site, the 50Megs free hosting deal is almost certainly out of the question.

They have a file-size limit* attached to that deal. Each file can be no bigger than 250KB, which is less than your flash swf file is likely to be.
This in itself is quite unusual for a hosting deal to specify, but it's generally typical of the kind of limitations that free deals force on their users.

more details: http://supanames.co.uk/index.php?page=newvhostlong

£13.99 per year (+ vat, which still makes it less than £1.40 a month)

I use http://www.easily.co.uk a lot (personally and for clients), not quite as cheep but they do a pay as you go on transfer and thier hosting is pretty well speced. Plus i've always had a quick and succesfull response to any problems/quearies that I've had. Something which is always a fairly high priority for me.
