Hi,
I am new to website design, I just finished school and am working on my first website. I am confused about domain names. How do you find out if one is available and why do some web hosting companies only offer certain ones (for example, geocities doesn't offer .ca)?
Also, is www.powweb.com a good place to get my website hosted?

I think some domain name extensions are limited to that country's jurisdiction. In Australia you need to have a registered business name and number before they'll give you a .com.au extension. It's to make sure all sites are on the level. Geocities just might not be in the business of selling Canadian domain names.

http://www.networksolutions.com - don't buy from these guys though, I'm sure you can do better with a google search.
