Domain names and hosting are very cheap. You could then look at creating a few websites that actually make a few quid. Then you would have more money.

This, if very current with a slightly more obscure artist, then a 1,000 word review should rank quite well right off the bat.

Pick a good domain name and away you go.

I'd hold fire on creating and sharing new links on the current domain (otherwise you'll have to create redirects to the proper domain).

Also, change to a permalink format that isn't shit. Best to get this stuff right from the off.

Do you mean get rid of the date, etc?

Hopefully I can just redirect, or do you see a problem with doing that? I'll sort the hosting out tonight/tomorrow morning when I get paid, so I can sort it all out pretty soon. The Facebook group's mostly so I don't bombard everyone with blog shit from my personal account., and Twitter will hopefully get a few retweets - bit more exposure.

Not sure either but at the moment there aren't that many posts so doing 301 redirects in the htaccess when he goes live is not going to be that big of a deal. When you do push live to a real host make sure you set up your permalinks in an SEO friendly way though (fuck I hate that term). Human readable without all the date shit is best. Same with category/tag filters (although that's a little more complex to fix)
  • Nick

You don't have these options when you're free hosting on Wordpress.com servers. You also can't add a 301 redirect so sort hosting for it as soon as you can, and just manually direct traffic to the new site.

Better but still needs refining. Also, the permalinks still need looking at…

The about page has 'about-2' at the end of it.

More importantly, I would strongly advise not having the category in the single post URLs.

If you ever changed category name then all the relevant single posts would need to be redirected. This would not be a good thing.
  • calder12
    calder12
    Senior Member Posts: 13,491
    Everything Tom said.

The about-2 can be a prick in WordPress because editing the slug in the post's edit mode usually doesn't work. This does:

Delete about (and remove it from Trash too)
Go to Posts list view and click Quick Edit on About-2
Change the slug there and save

You may need to change your menu but I am pretty sure you won't (just mentioned so you check)/

It's much better than the other, lot faster too, I'm guessing the other was using a lot of shit you didn't need.

Not really a fan of the massive footer personally and I'd be tempted to go much wider and a bigger font than you're currently using. It's about a third of my 1920 monitor right now and the forward and back buttons are miles from the copy.

    Ah, I replied to Tom.

Thanks calder. I quite like it being narrow, I think it makes it easier to read. In the same way you wouldn't stretch text across a while page.

It's faster because I've limited posts per page to 12. It was taking a while loading all of them in one go.

I understand the line length thing (thanks to you guys!) maybe move some of that footer stuff into a sidebar on the interior pages. If you catch on and start getting a following a sidebar is a good place for small ads too. (yes I know...)

Yeah. Those album covers are quite big, but it uses the same image for the thumbnail and the featured image, so they can't be as small as that site wants me to make them. I could scale them all down to an even 800x800, which I probably will.

I've cleared out the clutter from the footer (heyyyy). Most of it was useless bullshit anyway.

I've optimised it a bit. Has a much better score now although still falls down in a few areas. Like I say though, I think it's judging those thumbnails on the front page as being too big, but they need to be.

The front page thumbnails only need to load as big an image as maximum size. They don't need to load the full sized image used elsewhere (if they are find the theme builder and kick him in the nuts lol.

For the record it does look good Steve, just trying to offer constructive stuff to make it better!

I agree with emil to an extent, but there's a trade off. Poor performance scares off uses, especially early on.

sub - I was thinking of doing away with the ratings altogether. Thinking was no-one cares, it's fairly arbitrary anyway, and given how many of my all-time favourites I'm doing they'll all be 9s and 10s. You think they should stay though?

Ratings are as much personal opinion as the articles themselves. Agreed they're pretty useless (no such thing as a zero or a 10 out of 10) but a handy tl;dr and a bit of fun branding to support the name — 12 perfect tracks out of 12*, for example.

*appreciate albums can vary in track length but you get the idea.
