I too hate flash. I used to do a lot of signwriting years ago and would convince everyone they needed Flash cos it is so easy to paint. Got away with it for years. I don't suppose I need clear a space on the shelf for new software yet... Sean |

I think the first project I ever did in flash was 3.14... (yes, pi) times better than this. First of all, unless your font is called FLASH, it's not even an official entry as it doesn't follow the RULES. It's a joke, right? fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

How old are you people? Of course the font is called FLASH. Macromedia weren't even alive when this font was popular. Check an old Letraset catalogue. I used to paint this script (yes with a brush) Sean By the way, it was made with PSP7 |

That was actually directed towards the comments made about seanfs entry. It has more relevance than any other entry i've seen so far. If you take a step back and actually think about what the competition is supposed to be about (well, what I understand it to be about ie "the design must convey the 'feeling' of that font") it completely fulfills its purpose. Whether you like the execution or not is fairly irrelevant - the fact is that sean has managed to get across the fact that the font (called Flash) has and still is used pretty bloody badly (in todays terms). This font was used everywhere especially on those awful 'wow, look at this' type point of sales pieces. Maybe some people round here (and i'm not going to point fingers) should read up a little on graphic design, its history, its advancement, the way trends fade in and out. Learn who Eric Gill was, learn how people like Paul Rand shaped the way we look at things. Design isnt about using as many photoshop filters as you can (hell, it shouldn't even start on screen , but thats another matter) its about creating a suitable solution to a problem, its about conveying information, its about form, function and aesthetics. Learning what has gone on before will give you a far better insight into what you think design is than any amount of surfing or pixel pushing. Apologies for the rant but there are far too many people prepared to call themselves designers when actually they know jack shit about design or anything related to design. I know how to cook toast but i'd never call myself a chef oh boy its getting far too serious for a friday night, and i think my tea is burning... 3 things: -I'm old enough, BUT I missed the font flash and/or didn't know that was its actual name. I am SO terribly sorry for committing such a HORRIBLE blunder (no sarcasm there at all). -tomson makes many good points (no blasts back from me) -All "history lessons" aside, I'm still NOT a fan of this piece...but you know what they say about opinions... fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

Tomson, Thank You for your comments, I was beginning to doubt my sanity for a while. Flash was and still is a tacky font. As you rightly point out it was used on every cheap advert around a few years back. The gaudiness/tackiness of my piece was quite deliberate. Basic colours and little thought to overall appearance were Flash's trademark. A chic Photoshop job would have given completely the wrong message. Sean By the way, I love the Billy Casper avatar. |
