Is that a fact or merely your opinion?

I'd be interested in why you think that.

All the awards that I have been privvy to, the winners have seemed to win based on old school marketing ethos. Whether the design was a 'good website' and 'fit for purpose' or not didn't seem to matter so long as there was a catchy marketing idea behind it.
For the record - this isn't resentment; I've only entered a site in 2 competitions and both times they came away with something. But this was the DTi / UK Online thingummy and not a 'design compo'.
I am open to proof otherwise, and no - this wasn't fact, merely that which I have onserved.

Jiraffe - is it worth entering a competition if you've no intention of getting recognised?

To simply create? I think he's just looking for some guidelines by which to create some new experimental work for his portfolio because he, as many do, probably has problems enacting guidlines and such upon himself for creating pieces that aren't client-based. So he uses the competition guidelines as a means to focus his energies towards the greater good of his portfolio....

Ah ok, I took it as being a statement about the design industry in general not an observation on judging of competitions.

ne'mind.
