Hi, Anyone looking for the hosting competition that got spammed by members of this forum. It has been deleted (not by me, by a mod I am assuming). My apologies, it seems they found the comp inappropriate for this forum (I assume as I do not know why exactly it was deleted). Cheers, Leigh Last edited by leighmcc : 31-08-2007 at 19:29. |

- You create a whole thread advertising your business to promote a competition you are running. - You then receive replies, most were valid entries to this contest. - You then bump the thread a few times, advertising your business again. - Then you cancel the contest with a few days to go. - Then people complain, and you pull the thread. So in conclusion, you have spammed your link, and advertised your business, and probably with no intention to give anyone the prize. You will continue to do this in as many forums as you can find, and I doubt anyone would win. Therefore, you are a spammer. Hence the "pot kettle black" to your complaint to members complaining your "competition" never had a winner. Carry on like this and you will end up with a really bad reputation, mud sticks. |

You should have checked BEFORE you ran the competition whether or not it was legal. I'm not being funny, but its irresponsible to set up a competition if you don't know the ins and outs of the legalities behind it. That having been said, for something of the size you were running, it probably wouldnt have made a difference. No one would have done anything about it. You weren't offering huge amounts of money or anything, just a free hosting package that someone could purchse online for about £100 or less. From this point of view, you probably should have just gone through with it and not done it again. By handling it this way, you've unfortunately hacked off quite a few people. Never mind. Excuse me? I haven't "made up" a story here... I was just telling you where you went wrong. Don't have a dig at me cause you don't like the criticism you're getting here. Ultimately, this whole thing is your own fault for not researching the legality of the competition before you started it. Had you done that, there wouldn't have been a problem. At the end of the day, you promise people a competition and then rescind that promise, then people are going to be pissed off. My signature sucks.

You are following the law to the letter, which really didn't apply to you, nor would you have been prosecuted for breaking. Instead it seems you used this ambiguous law to worm your way out of giving up a prize. If I was a mod on these forums I would of banned you for this. Quote:
Post a link to the new competition then, perhaps this is something you can host on your own website, and link to it from many forums allowing anyone free entry. I want to see someone win this prize, do keep us informed. |

Oh you have to be kidding.... how many times have you posted a link to your own website already? It appears in most of your posts, and is linked from the drop down menu when you click your name. It is not against the rules to link to another website on these forums, providing the link is relevant you won't get flamed. If you don't want to post it, PM me the link then so I can enter the competition again. |

Now, I see what you've (cleverly) done there... You've responded with pretty much the same reply as to my previous post. Very good. The thing is here, you haven't addressed the issue at hand. You closed a competition that you had opened without giving out a prize. If you're so committed to doing what is right, then in most countries I know of, there is also a law about it being illegal to offer a prize for entry into anything, and then not issuing said prize. Incidentally, to clear up your understanding of the situation here, I haven't made myself upset. You have annoyed me with your shoddy attitude and sloppy organisation (not doing your research before you open the competition etc). The first post of this thread shouldn't have been having a go at those people who got annoyed that the competition was closed and spammed the thread (Thats what happens on forums when people get annoyed... Live with it), you should have explained the situation in full and apologised for the inconvenience that your actions caused. Personally, I'm not fussed for myself. I entered for a laugh, because the premise was so silly. My annoyance is on behalf of all the other people that entered, some of whom might not be in the lucky position I am, and who might not be able to get hosting at the moment, because they are too you, cant afford it etc. So yeah, I'm pissed off... and you should be bothered. You had the potential to get some customers out of this if you had done it right, and you've blown it. Well done. My signature sucks.

I'm posting this to clarify a few things for anyone reading this thread. Leigh deleted his other posts here, as they illustrated his bad attitude, and constituted bad PR for his site. He also modified his initial post, taking on board some of what I had said about apologising to the people that entered and explaining what happened, but tried to shift the blame on to the folks that run dt. What actually happened is that he closed the competition after realising it wasn#'t actually legal. He defended his decision saying "i did what i know to be right". However, running a competition offering a prize, and that prize never being issued is illegal. Not right. Whilst I am sure Leigh would like anyone reading this topic anew to believe that none of this is his fault, the truth is that it is, and he has shown a terrible attitude in the way he has dealt with the concerns expressed perfectly calmly by myself and others. I agree with comments above that I personally would have banned him before now, but I don't have that option. Buyer beware! My signature sucks.
