I rent a desk and a computer at a small scale design consultancy in Suffolk.

Mostly enjoyable, sometimes infuriating and everything inbetween. 90% of the time though, I absolutely love it. I never have any trouble getting out of bed in the morning. I always feel motivated when the chips are down.

The two biggest downsides for me are: the irregularity in work/money and getting people to pay what they owe. One month I'll be twiddling my thumbs, then a load of work will come in all at once. I'll work late everyday of that month to get things done, then I'll have another extremely quiet month. Means you have to watch the cash situation as one month's windfall has to tide you over until the next big work influx. It can be a bit of a worry but in 3 and 1/2 years of freelancing, something's always come in to save my bacon.

does it get lonely?
Working from a studio that houses a couple of other design companies means there's always someone about. But it can get quiet. I have worked at home from time to time but it doesn't work for me. You need somewhere you can shut the door at the end of the day so you can leave what you were working on at the studio.

Quote:
do you make any money?
I make enough to pay the rent and afford a few luxuries. I do have to be careful with the cash incase the work dries up completely but thankfully that hasn't happened so far. Also, I could probably be busier if I was more active at persuing new clients, there's loads of work out there, you've just got to find it. Unfortunately, I'm a lazy bastard.

do you drink too much coffee?
I don't drink coffee at all, I'm not a fan of hot drinks. I snack instead; fruit, mixed nuts, biscuits, I'm always reaching for something.

Erm, I have no idea what you're talking about.

My apartment, Tokyo, Japan. Although I hope to start renting a space soon.

Easy.

does it get lonely?

Depression is easy to set in when you've got cabin fever. Lonely isn't a word I'd use, I don't think I've ever been lonely. Human contact becomes entertaining when you've not left the house for a few days.

do you make any money?

When my clients get around to paying me, yes.

Quote:
do you drink too much coffee?

far too much. Not good for the sleep / skin / concentration. I'd advise against coffee and sugary drinks. Cold tea is good.

If you mean the fudged together "tribute" DVD, yes.

Parsons, I would ideally love to rent some space as I agree that working from home will be tough - too many distractions, but I cant expect to do that at the start.

cheers for the advice tho guys got my meeting with the business ventures centre tomorrow and then I hope to be self employed by Septemeber.

oh BTW, Mighty Boosh BBC3 check it out!

A study in my house. It's nice working in your slippers.

Being home alone is fine, but working creatively on your own can be a drag. I make ok $$$. Nothing crazy.

im self employed. it'd be cool one day to work at a firm of some sort for some collab, but im quite comfortable in my own home studio for the time being. i make enough for my 19 year old pockets. i prefer working alone. no coffee. lots of tea.

I have'nt got the balls to go freelance. Although I feel underpayed, the comfort of a sales person bringing in the work for you and an accounts manager to deal with all the monetary issues definately means that life is less stressful. Maybe one day...

Yeah. Plus you get benefits. Health insurance, life insurance, 401(K) pension plan, dental insurance, vision insurance, gym membership discounts, first-home-purchase bonus. The list goes on.

Too good to pass up.

Lucky bastards in the UK have NHS.

I'm self empoyed.

Work from home in my attic and going freelance is the best thing I ever did

I live with two other girls and my mates are always round here, so I don't get lonely. I find it annoying having punks staring over my shoulder when im trying to get down to some work anyway. Money started off shit but now im doing tons better

I drink tea.

No.

Yep.
Work in a spare room at home, loads better than having a boss to answer to.
Not lonely, nice to have peace and quiet during the day to get work done, I try to get out in the evenings.
Drink loads of redbull. Thats nothing new though.
Nope.
