Website Price
Could anyone please give me an approximate price for a site that I am interested in having built for me? Content: 15 pages Online Store Daily updates Personal logo and pictures I am not sure what other information is required for a price. But I am looking for a professional looking business website and I would like to get an idea of what a "good" price would be. Their responsibilites would be to build and also to host the site. Thanks in advance. |

Well, it all depends, really. It depends on the skill and reputation of the designer - some people will charge $20 for an HTML page, some will charge $500. What's going to get really expensive is the store - especially if you want something custom programmed. That would get well into the thousands, I bet. I don't do programming, personally, so I can't say. There are scripts and systems that can be used for that, which would reduce costs significantly, but might look less professional. Also, with daily updates, it depends on who is doing those updates. If you're going to hire the designer to update your site on a regular basis, they'll charge you a smallish monthly fee for that. On the other side, someone could set up a content management system for you - there are many free CMSs out there, though, so the only charge would be setting up the CMS and getting it working so you could do the regular updates. As for the hosting, if I were the designer, I would personally be willing to set up and manage that for the cost of hosting (anywhere from $5-$100 per month, depending on the sort of plan the site requires and the amount of business you intend to have) plus an additional monthly cost for my time. I haven't really broken into anything but static XHTML/CSS sites with some PHP, so I'm not the best source, but I'd be willing to bet a project like this would cost (depending on specifics) anywhere from several hundred to many thousand dollars - most likely the latter - with a possible monthly fee for updates, hosting, and administration. I recommend finding a designer/developer who is capable of the things you want and to sit down with them and discuss. EDIT: I'm actually very interested in what other, more experienced types, might charge... Last edited by pgo : 20-06-2005 at 04:30. |

we have an inhouse ecommerce/cms application that can be modified if required to meet specific needs that price i said was ballpark, and more than likely a minimum. if lots of customisation was needed it would increase a great deal |

It all depends on the complexity, there are lots of different types of onlone store varying in complexity depending on what features they want. Work out how long it will take and use an hourly or daily rate to find a final figure. |

Bear in mind that he hasn't actually specified whether or not he wants a custom built or customized CMS and ecommerce system. If those were needing to be custom built, I can easily believe cam's price - and more. If not, if you could use, say, Mambo and some basic PayPal ecommerce thing - it may be significantly less, but I still wouldn't charge less than $1K for something like that. (I'm just starting out, though). Just tell them that big commercial CMSes can cost $10K-$100K. Shit ain't cheap. |

Of course. If you find a good freelancer through, the work will be just as good as that of an agency; cheaper, but not neccessarily cheap. |

Thanks
I appreciate the information. Yes - the site will be custom built and I plan on being able to update myself. I see no point in having to pay someone cold cash to input HTML with all of the software available out there today. I would rather spend my money on Dreamweaver or maybe even FrontPage if possible to specifically to do the updates myself. Also - the store will be a fully functional eCommerce product. Thanks again for the input and ballpark figures. Jared |
