nervous about first real client
So today I struck up a conversation with a woman who says she runs a business selling bath tubs to older people. I offered to do a website for them, she said she has one but hates it and I said I could take over all their web work, and she said great, I gave her my card, she said after the 4th of July weekend is over she will give me a call and I can meet her and we can discuss it all in further detail. I'm super excited yet super nervous about the whole thing; what should I do?! What should I wear? What should I bring with me? What should I tell her? |

I would check out her bathtubs first, to be frank. Have a shower in one, drop the soap in the slippery water, fumble around pretending you have dodgy knees and if the bathtub feels safe, take the job on. No point in getting sued down the road as an accessory to misrepresentation. Don't wear what you have on in your avatar. (In fact, you could get a new avatar - we've seen that one and the joke has worn off, thin as it was). I've been to France twice on a hovercraft, so your argument is invalid.

Pretty sure you said you weren't about to start offering your services professionally until you upped your game, both your coding and design skills were quite weak last I saw, though you haven't posted anything since our scathing review of your work - just honestly can't imagine you've improved THAT much yet. Would be very very honest about your skill level with her, do not sell her something you cannot deliver. But yes, check freelance switch - consider your rates, time it'll take you, any deadlines she might have, her needs and requirements, target audience, any information about her business (and very seriously, whether you can actually deliver on her requirements - there is no shame in saying it's not something you feel you can deliver, it's respectful to the client). Sort contracts, and make sure you limit how many revisions you agree to for free etc. |

I know - I've messed around with different fonts, and I really want to jump on the huge font bandwagon but not sure which one to go with. Also the entire thing isn't centered, this was a mistake from the very start. It's all positioned from the left. I need to go back and make it in one div and center that div, and make them all 0 from left in that div. |

Haha, well you have improved a great deal no doubt, good job. You've still got a long way to go on the basics though, simply takes time to improve on some things. So I stand by my point about making sure you feel confident you can deliver the goods to the client, after all they're not paying for your training |

i love meeting with clients. personally, i treat them all differently when it comes to the initial meets. i.e. the bigger clients i've worn a suit, small/medium businesses i've dressed smart/casual or worn a company polo shirt and for friends and formal clients i've worn anything. a tip: be prepared for any questions and if you're a figiter or one of those people who like to shake their leg when sitting down... refrain. |

It's funny because even the ripoff was done poorly. Upped your game indeed. I'd suggest leaving this forum forever, before jg9 finds out where you live. Fringe Focus | Design Blog
