I have a problem with designer portfolios. Generally they are very misleading. You see a screen capture of a "name" site and the client name next to it. etc etc This makes me think as an employer "wow" - this kids good. On further inspection or even a chat you realise they are full of crap and all they did was post it to an ftp site. Designers who work for agencies should be banned from using company work in their personal portfolio. Full stop. |

Its Monday morning I haven’t had my cup of tea yet and the cat woke me up this morning by biting my nose, so I try and keep this polite… I think I should be aloud to say and show my work off, I work full time for a web development company. When I first started here my job was classed as the least important. The cleaners seemed to be more important in the boss’s eyes. Things have changed now and the boss has changed his views fully and the design part is getting the respect it deserves. I may have the wrong attitude but if you have done work that you want to show off and take pride in by showing it off in a portfolio I think you should be aloud. I am not taking or using this as anything but a portfolio site. If I had a site that has no names to the work, I’ll look like some gimp working in a shed doing sites for the local dog kennels and church groups. Would you be able to say that if you worked for someone like channel 4 , or BBC doing their web site design, would you be able to not say a single word that you done the design for the site…. Anyone that say’s you wouldn’t say anything and wouldn’t take any credit are in the wrong job. In my eyes taking pride in your work is part of the job, if you don’t you may as well join the rest of the wanabe’s doing full website design and build for £50 a page and churn the crap out. |

I think it's fair to show the design work you have done, so long as, like Japanmik says, you make your project role clear, and make it very clear if you were employed by a company to do the work for that client. I've been thinking this over recently because I'm in the very slow process of putting together a new portfolio site. For example, I did some work for L'Oreal a while back, but this was for the company that I work for now, for another company, for L'Oreal! but if I show the design work, and explain it wasn't freelance this should be ok, hmmm, it's Monday I haven't had enough caffeine and I may not be making sense... |
