Site Design -- How Much???
I just designed a site for a Pizza place and I am not sure what to charge. Here is a link to the site... MANGIERI'S It is only 4 pages. The photos and logos were already made. I had to do some photoshop work to cut & crop things. Also some mild flash. To me the site is SUPER simple. Just basic table html. I have never charged for a site and am not sure what something like this would go for. Thanks --- TW |

Agree on a price before you start. Or at least agree on an hourly rate, then keep track of hours spent. And get a deposit for at least a third of your estimate, then don't upload it until you get the final payment. At this point he doesn't even have to pay you at all |

Do what Mike said. It's best to give a flat rate, which you base off your hourly rate multiplied by estimated time it'll take you plus extra for unforeseen expenses. Before you start, say "This site is going to cost $X". You don't need to divulge your hourly rate unless they really want to know - it also depends on the situation you're in. |

this person is my wife's best friend. i didn't want her to pay me. she keeps insisting though. she had money set aside to pay a web designer if i couldn't do it. i could tell her any price and she would pay it. my problem is i don't even know what the going rate for something like this would be. i've tried to look on the net but really don't come up with much except for those "insta-sites". i was hoping some people here could give me an estimate on what they would charge for this ... and then i could figure it out from there. thank you for the advice - it really is good - just doesn't apply to this situation. she has been trying to pay me for a month now, but i keep blowing her off about it. so i want to give her a figure. |

Haha. Mmm. It's not that bad, geez. Hourly rates are very subjective - they depend on your age, experience, talent, skills, location (cost of living), employment situation (including insurance situation), relationship with client, etc. If you're interested, I charge $30/hr (roughly - goes up and down at my discretion). Sounds like a lot, but it's really not when you consider the infrequency of work and such. A simple 4 page site like that (page design, 4 page coding), I'd probably give myself around 12-15 hours to do it, plus a bit extra for unforeseen consequences and client changes. $600, but that's about the smallest amount I'd charge for a website. Generally, it'd be more. But that's me. And then domain registration and hosting services can be provided by me for small brochures like that. As well as maintenance contracts. For close personal friends, I'd probably give a serious discount. |

If it's your wife's best friend, tell her you want a threesome for it. That should even things out. And if she still wants to pay you after that, then you know you're good Last edited by mike_mitry : 19-05-2006 at 07:45. Reason: Bad grammar |

thank you so much for your insight. she is a close personal friend to my wife so i was gonna charge her a 1/3 of what it would cost her. she said she set aside $1500 for a website because she didn't know how much it would cost. i was like YIKES - i don't need that much. |

I hate it when people sell themselves short. Thinking small will get you nowhere. THINK BIG! Don't feel guilty about money it is only a prize in a game. You will spend it someone else will benefit. Take whatever you can get away with. Legally. |
