US Cheques - Natwest take a month and are shite, Lloyds TSb - 5 Days, charge a few quid.
So to sum up, pay your cheques in Lloyds TSB if you have one.

They don't charge them anything. All the charges are passed on to you, which are only the administration charge and then the exchange rate.

Another note, Halifax did say it would take up to 30 days, but the money was usually there within a week.
