what's your line?

Why do I want to know? Just out of interest really - to get an idea of who's doing what. Plus my working life is changing pretty drastically next week.

one week till i quit to become full-time dad

who's the other guy that's employed?
ATM I am working for a big corp here, doing the websites/prints, but I'm hoping to get a job in advertizing/web design because I am tired of people not understanding what resolution or cmyk mean

It will not matter where you work mate, most clients have trouble what resolution and CMYK is. Its part of the rich tapestry that we know as graphic design.

You expect a client not to know what resolution is. But when all types of managers suggest I should be using pictures they found on the internet (usually some 50K gifs) in print brochures, now that really is annoying. Especially when it happens every single time I get such a job.

I am the only one who does everything that involves graphics here, so I basically have nobody to talk to about things that I am interested in...

Well you get the point.

I do understand an sympathise with you. As long as you try your best and are happy with your work. You really have to take control of such situations and advise your client or boss on the best solution for a particular problem. If they want things their way, then you sometimes have to give in. This can be a good thing because if they insist on using that a 50k gif for print, they will soon learn by their mistake when they see the end result. Thats when you feel really smug!

I can't be happy with my work when they insist on using Arial on posters, and they are awestruck that I ask them to pay for pictures from professional photographers. However they just bought a new mercedes for one of the guys in my office, and some guy from the it department just got a brand new Citroen C4. Unfortunately the pay is too good here, so I can't leave yet. I'm waiting

I've got a nice client with a "logo" which is the name of the company in Times New Roman.

With bevels.

And a drop shadow.

Waiting will not get you out of your current situation. You must make your goals clear to yourself, have a plan and go looking. A dream job with dream clients will not come looking for you. It does not matter how good you are, you must be motivated and hungry for it and not stop until you get there.

I am sure there are some very talented and well paid designers that work for great agencies who have dream clients who use this forum. One thing I am sure of is that they didnt get where they are by 'waiting'.

It's a cheeky little font isn't it? Just right for when you want to make your document look a bit "jazzy".

I find the "beanz" clip-art characters compliment this typeface perfectly, and I recommend the combination to all my clients who find Times New Roman, or the other font, Arial, a bit "boring"

I couldn't supply anyone with Comic Sans even if I wanted to. I went to one Geocities site and promptly disposed of said font. Deleted it from my Pc completely. I intend to do so with every computer I'll ever own.

I do meaningless little freelance work that really just amounts to random sigs and a few websites for friends. No money exchanges hands because it's just charity work that I really wouldn't want on my resume anyway. We just call it time of experience. :P

I was sure you'd say that

what makes you think I am not looking? It's just that very few firms here actually do design properly. For instance this one http://www.blue-wave-solutions.com/ hires webdesigners, but you wouldn't catch me dead applying for a job with them. And I guess it's obvious why. There are tons of similar offers, companies that are worth working in are very rare. That's what I am waiting for, in the meantime I'm working on my portfolio, learning as much as I can, etc.
