If you are self-employed, you will pay Class 2 national insurance contributions on a quarterly basis. Its currently £27.30 a quarter. You will receive a bill from Inland Revenue in the post each quarter. You can probably pay monthly by direct debit too. If you earn over a certain amount (can't remember it off the top of my head), then you also have to pay Class 4 NI contributions. These will be calculated as part of your self-assesment.
