Yes I enjoy a good plug, but of course I practice safe-plugging and I only do it in dedicated plug forums.

I'll keep your offer in mind; perhaps I can outsource all of my requests for 'full sex' in the future. It'll save some unnecessary effort on my behalf.

Yeah, but who's charging who?

(y'know I'm only joshing, japanmik. Don't wanna seem like I'm always ragging on you.)

---

Fwiw, I'm actually on the lookout for some decent and reasonably cheap hosting, so this post is handy for me.
(Still, I'd like to get some feedback from established users first, y'know?)

When so many hosting deals look the same on paper regarding features and price, customer service is what really whittles down the shortlist.

Also, fwiw, I'm wondering why there's no mention of GBP or even Euros in the costs mentioned. It would at least help to give the impression that users in the UK and Europe are 'part of the plan' and will get as much attention and dedication as those in the US and Oz.

p.s. there is at least one typo in the site blurb.

Hiho!

Yes I'm aware of the currency problem. The US and AU figures are used because a) we're in Australia so local clients can see relative prices b) we're currently processing in USD. Our price conversions are dynamically updated using a soap/xml set up which polls the conversion rate every hour. I'm working on getting a GBP, Euro (and more) conversions set up too. All in all, it's nothing more than just so potential clients have a 'fair idea' of what the USD equivalent is - all prices are charged in USD (for now).

As for talking to current customers, please feel free to drop by our forums. You'll see there aren't [i:0637486a76]heaps[/i:0637486a76] of clients currently, as operations started in November '02. Nonetheless, the users who are there I'm sure will give honest feedback to your questions. Some clients are more active on the forums than others.

Typos? In the forum blurb or on the homepage? I update aspects of the website at regular intervals, so it's possible that I may have overlooked something.

The typo's not a biggie. It's just that these things catch my eye.
It's just a missing letter in the "Don't miss this..." blurb on the .../hosting.php page.

...maintenace...

You said don't miss it- I didn't.

Fwiw, it might be a good idea to clarify the specs in the "All plans come standard with the following powerful features." table to make it more clear which listed features relate to the Starter and Master plans- in particular, the (un)limited FTP accounts.

Thx for the post.
I'll be sure to take a swing by the forums to gauge the mood.

I was considering an Ensim or Plesk setup as I've seen one or two very good deals with those, but I've since heard some bad things about Ensim and some good things about CPanel, so...

[/quote:35e715cbf2] go with cPanel all the way if you can - I used to run a hosting company and its by far the best. Drop me a pm if you would like to see a demo of it - I use it on this site.

Sure thing, swing by any time

As for which CP, well I can't really make that decision for you. Obviously it would be beneficial for me to say "Cpanel is the best don't bother with any other!" but many people have different preferences and I respect that. I think it's safe to say that Cpanel seems to be the most popular, and a lot people prefer its ease of use.

[i:b152260031]A small piece of advice on your web design:[/i:b152260031]
76k for a hosting company's logo is not a good way to demonstrate the speed of your servers as it makes the first page load very slowly on dial up!

Anyone know how many Australian dollars you get to the pound?

I prefer H-Sphere to CPanel, but I guess it is what you are used to.

Yes I'm changing the design quite a bit right now :P

www.xe.com is a good resource.

The prices above are in USD... sorry forgot to mention. I've edited the post and stated that now.

Plenty of people have begun to use the various png formats in web design. Admittedly, it's still nowhere near the majority of people, but designers and developers are gradually cottoning on to the benefits of png as a web and general purpose image file format.

It would be much more popular if the MSIEWin team stopped behaving like retards and got their png support up to scratch like the rest of the 21st century browser development community.

Maybe I'm just being a little too cynical, but it really wouldn't surprise me to find out that MS had come to some kind of mutual back-scratching arrangement with Compuserve.
I find that easier to believe than thinking that proper png support is beyond the technical abilities of the MSIEWin team, especially when much smaller browser developer teams can manage it ok (not to mention MSIE's own Mac version team).

Can't actually remember the last time I used a gif (bar a couple 'o animated ones ) I've been using pngs for a while now. Of course to be safe you gotta stick with png-8 or you get all kinds of funkyness on PC's if you use png-24.

I tried a site that utilised the full alpha channels of png-24 so that the background colour of the site could be changed monthly and the monotone images changed with it (They were white with transparency). Worked great on my mac, but on a PC the transparency greys out and looks truely horrible in IE at least (and if it doesn't work for IE on a PC it might as well be scrap for most people)

Guess we'll just have to wait for full support, but hasn't it been long enough ???

Animated PNGs are a format in themselves and are called MNGs (pron. 'ming') (Multiple-image Network Graphics)

Further reading:
http://www.libmng.com/

I used PNG24 on the last incarnation of my folio site.
Of course, MSIEWin didn't like them, but a little proprietory css got them behaving.
It's pitiful that we need to add invalid css to a site in order to get MSIEWin to do something that other browsers have been able to since several versions ago.

I habitually keep the code valid strict at all times, so I stuck the MSIE proprietory css into its own .css file and @imported it straight after the main .css file. That way, only the png.css file failed validation while the rest of the entire site passed ok with valid CSS and XHTML 1.0 Strict markup.
