Gave up the smokes over 18 months ago - got to the end of a pack and didn't buy any more.
Once I got past 1-2 weeks I never looked back - had a tug on a fag about 3 weeks in and couldn't stand it.

The pub is the killer though - sucha social thing. These days I hate smoky pubs because I come out with my clothes reeking (and you really do begin to notice it once the smoke isn't a regular part of your environment) but I also hate wanky bars where people aren't allowed to smoke - this isn't California, after all!

Seriously, though - go for it.
The only thing that will determine the outcome is your willpower.
Patches etc. will help you break the association of the craving for nicotine with shoving a smoke in your gob, but you still need to ween yourself off the nicotine itself.

Just think of the lovely cash that you can save... and then spend on beer to bugger up your liver instead of your lungs... ops:
