I can't speak for the UK, but in the U.S. "fixing" something has the meaning you mentioned along with influencing the results. For example: The soccer/football player bet his team would lose, so in order to
fix the match, he kicked the ball in his own goal.
(in Columbia, I think that would mean he'd soon be dead...)
