It's a fad bacause it is what all the politicos within webdesign are propagating at the moment. Just as back in '99 when 'everything will be in Flash i ntwo years' was all vogue.

All those aspects you mention are obviously important but it really epends where they are applied to. Certainly CSS gives more control of type, background and small elements of design. However it still has serious cross platform issue.

It is also quite interesting to see how certain people seem to feel everything needs to be 'standartised' while the actual characted of the industry really prevents that. Accessing the web is and remains a personal experience and that's where focus IMHO needs to be.
