I use AddWeb 6 Platinum (Get it here). They are up to version 7 now but there aren't enough changes to warrant the upgrade. I also think the much cheaper Deluxe version is probably good for most - I mainly chose the platinum because my last employer was buying it for me

I use it to check my ranking on many search engines at once to a depth of 500th place - Can check up to 10 URLs and 10 Keywords at a time. It's also good for submitting to loads of search engines at the same time. Another good feature is LinkTrader allowing you to create reciprocal links with numerous other users - if you do be sure to stick to trading with ones that have less than 100 links or they will be considered link farms by Google and some others. There are lots of other features too and it's well worth checking out. It has a feature to check how well your pages are optimized and even to make optimizations for you but I haven't tried that out.

You need to concentrate on everything on a page. Make sure that your <title> has your most relevant keywords at the start of it. If you can get a keyword rich domain name. Name your pages after your keywords and put them in folders named after your keywords. Use <H>eader tags and put your keywords near the start. Use <alt> tags and have your keywords in there. Use your keywords in context in your main page(s). Although many search engines now ignore <meta> tags you still want to use them. Try and link any <script>s from seperate files. Make sure you get your keyword density just right - too much and you will be dismissed as spam, too little and you won't be considered as important as the next page. Set up lots of reciprocal linking but avoid FFA sites and anyone with over 100 links on a page. One way links are better but harder to negotiate.

Alternatively you can hire me to do it for ya - My SEO service thingy is here.

I get great results with Altavista, MSN, Yahoo etc but since Google changed their shit a few months back I'm not getting much success - back to learning I guess as I used to be able to get number 1 on Google out of 7,000,000+ results for some very popular keywords/phrases.

Oh another thing - optimize for 2 or 3 word phrases as this is how most people search and it's practically impossible to get good rankings for single generic words anyway. Avoid words like 'the' and 'and' as they are too generic and most engines just ignore them.

And make sure that your keywords are actually worth optimizing for by checking them out at http://www.wordtracker.com/ It's not worth spending ages optimizing a page that only 3 people a month actually search for.
