I'm also trying to put a left column height of 100% on a style sheet so that the background image 'stretches' to fill the space, defined by the amount of text in the centre column, but it doesn't seem to want to do it .....

100% height is an arse. Fake it instead...

You should have a look at your site in browsers other than IE too.
