Creating with Dreamweaver/Fireworks/etc.

When I try to open an Illustrator file, I get an error message that says could not open file, save as Illustrator 8. But, I'm about ready to hang up my hat anyway. I have two books on Studio MX and neither takes me step-by-step through creating basic pages, let alone how to get a site up & running. The books don't explain how any of the programs relate to each other -- they just give me snapshots of various functions, but they don't connect the dots. I should've stuck to Adobe's Go Live.
I need to rewrite my sites right away -- can you recommend a method of learning the software rather than reading & hunting & pecking? Here are my websites: www.alfredshaheen.com & www.williamtunberg.com
Both are on yahoo and both were written with yahoo's software. I'm self-taught. The store was very complicated to write, with a lot of go-rounds to yahoo's template software to give it the look it has. Now I need to transfer to register.com and have to rewrite both sites from scratch.
The books I have are (1) "Macromedia Studio MX 2004" by Green, Chilcott & Flick, and (2) "Studio MX for Dummies". Every time either book tells me to do something, you can't -- when it tells me to go somewhere, the place doesn't exist. I've visited their websites and can't find their tutorial downloads. I've emailed support and haven't received a response. It's a mess!
Thanks for any guidance you can give me.
