I'm not really surprised that NN4/IE4/IE3 do nowt as this method is W3C DOM, so beyond their capabilities.
I'm more than happy to write them off.

I'm also not surprised that the popups 'get through' as most popup blockers will allow new windows created by a specific user action (e.g. mouse click) to go through.

Good to know about the image placement problems.
Could possibly correct that by using verbose css attributes, rather than grouping it all into background.
Alternatively, it might require the BMH hack to fix, though that me be going beyond the call of duty.

Moz1.4 is a bit of an odd reaction. Would have thought it would handle it fine.

I'd like to add this to my js functions scrap-book, but I'll might take another look at it to see if I can make it Moz1.4-proof.
Not sure the stats will show it as being worth the additional effort.
