i had a macbook, gf had a macbookpro. same specs - 2.2 c2d, 4gb ram. i traded her and apart from the screen i didnt notice any difference.

everyday at work i have running simultaneously:
- ps or dw
- eclipse
- windows server 2003 virtual machine
- ibm portal server on the win vm (2gb minimum requirement)
- web browser(s) - usually flock

and they run like a dream. i'm really impressed with the power.

bottom line, macbook would be fine unless you need the higher res screen - but it will still be cheaper if you buy a nice 20" lcd + macbook.
