I agree that most stuff can be learned online, and that the best way to understand software etc. is to just play around with it and figure stuff out yourself... But to me schools is much more than just learning the stuff, you (hopefully) also recive constructive critisism on your work and create a strong network. I also think, that when you rely on online tutorials, there is a great chance that you will fall into a pit of designers creating basiclly the exact same stuff... I would say try school, and depending on the country you live in, it might even be free...
