not the same thing. in freehand you could have a file with, for exampleys; a business card, letterhead and an A2 poster sitting next to each other.
very handy for working on a campaign/design running across different formats.
much prefer the illustrator interface myself, even though i started out with freehand back in the day.
disappointed some of good freehand features didn't make their way into cs3.
