Be sure to look for 'the catch'.

There often is one with free hosting
(what with there being 'no such thing as a free meal' and all that malarky)

They're sure to be VERY minimally specified and may even be too lowly specced for a portfolio site.

A quick glance at the 50Megs site shows that the free hosting has very limited email facilities, no ftp access, some potentially limiting filesize capping and the perennial popups and banners.
There's the catch, or at least, some of them.

If this is a 'just for the fun of it' site then you might not mind the popups and banners, the email limitations and the other drawbacks. However, if this is going to be a site where you show your work to others who might then want to employ your services, then I'd strongly advise against going with any plan that uses popups and banner ads.
You're also soon likely to find that you need ftp and greater email facilities than those offered by the 50Meg free hosting plan.

As is said many times on web-design forums - few things undermine the credibility and professionalism of a site/author than popup adverts and banner ads.

Hosting is pretty darn cheap nowadays and you can get a brilliantly specced hosting deal for less than £2 p/month.
