you can create groups but they don't auto activate in either app afaik*; i add fonts to groups named after a project and then activate as required - maintype at least does it on the fly so at the "missing fonts" dialog i just browse and activate before cancelling the replacement.

linotype are offering Font Management - Simple, Smart, Free - Linotype FontExplorer X which apparently does auto activate on demand; the new non-beta pc version isn't out yet but it is available for mac.
