I don't think this is possible generally. From my experience, laptops can extend to other monitors, but lack the capability to act simply as a monitor themselves. I could be wrong about this.

If you could find one that can do this, you'd need a video card in your desktop (the computer you want to have dual monitors) that has 2 video outs (2 x VGA, DVI, or one of each).
