It is quite possibly the most popular form of predominantly 'instrumental' music in today's society.
I think the reason that techno/electronica/... is most popular is that is feeds into extra-curricular social activities much more strongly than other similar music form.

I feel that my personal preference for electronica/glitch/neo-classic is partially the result of it being easy to work to- it's stimulating without being distracting.

Vocal tracks (i.e. vocal frequencies) generally occupy a part of the audio spectrum that trigger a higher state of attention. This is my educated guess as to why instrumental tracks are the most popular kind of music in concentrated work environments such as design studios.

It's an extention of the principle that tell us why instrumental music is more popular in restaurants, etc... settings.
Instrumental music clashes less with conversation in those environments and will not trigger the hightened state of attention as our brains struggle to subconciously listen to the words when 'songs' are played quietly in the background.

I could be talking pants, of course, but the logic seems sound (pardon the pun).
