can a hard drive die beyond repair?

Last week my Hard Drive died completly (no reason other than Windows XP) and I finally brought myself round to putting the restore disks in.. but nothing.. apparantly the disks cannot make Directories

Does this mean my year old 80GB is beyond repair??
