lets just put it this way.
splash pages are a popular thing right now, they look cool and they catch the users attention right away (if done correctly) as do magazine or book covers.
in design you should know that the first thing the consumer sees should be the most attractive, thus the reason for covers or "splash pages".
Just my opinion, either way everyone says the love the splash itself.
